Experience one of the most spectacular cross-country rides in Guatemala with our Lake Atitlán Oeste Mountain Bike Day Tour. This point-to-point adventure connects hidden viewpoints high above the lake, offering breathtaking perspectives of the surrounding volcanoes and pueblos.

The day begins with a 4×4 shuttle up one of the steepest roads at Lake Atitlán, climbing from the lakeshore to San José Chacayá. Here, the route follows an ancient Mesoamerican trail through onion terraces that have been farmed since 1000 AD. Riding along the northwest rim, you’ll pedal beside 4,000-foot cliffs with panoramic views of volcanoes Atitlán, Tolimán, and San Pedro.

Midday, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch at the Chuiraxamoló Ecological Park, a viewpoint perched 3,000 feet above Santa Clara Atitlán. In the afternoon, the adventure continues with a thrilling descent: flowy singletrack through lush cloud forest that drops more than 1,000 meters back to the lake.

Chuiraxamoló Ecological Park

Perched above Santa Clara La Laguna, Chuiraxamoló Ecological Park is one of the most scenic viewpoints around Lake Atitlán. The park sits on the original trade route of the Tz’utujil Maya, who used these high ridges to cross toward the western side of the lake. Today, it remains a cultural and natural landmark, offering sweeping vistas of Atitlán’s volcanoes and villages far below.

Managed by the local municipality, the park features a network of hiking and biking trails that wind through pine forest, along with one of the highest ziplines in Guatemala. It’s a unique blend of history, adventure, and nature that makes for a perfect stop on our rides along the lake’s northwest rim.

San Juan La Laguna

The Artists Village of Lake Atitlán

This ride includes a visit to San Juan La Laguna, the lakeside artist town known for its colorful murals, weaving cooperatives, and vibrant Tz’utujil Maya culture. After descending to the lake, you have time to explore its galleries, street art, and markets.

The town is covered in murals that tell stories of Maya history, spirituality, and the relationship between people and the lake. Women’s weaving collectives continue to use natural dyes from plants and minerals, offering an authentic cultural encounter. San Juan earns its name as the “artist’s village” of Lake Atitlán.
