Jan 7th – Lake Atitlan Oeste

Lake Atitlán Oeste feels like riding the rim of a volcano-shaped dream. The route loops along the lake’s wild western shore—quiet villages, steep canyon walls, coffee fields clinging to impossible slopes, and long, rolling singletrack that weaves between pockets of cloud forest. Riders get big-sky lake views, technical bursts of trail, and that surreal “how is this real?” sensation Atitlán always delivers. It’s a punchy, scenic, wonderfully off-the-map ride—perfect for anyone who wants a taste of the lake’s wilder side.
Partway through the day the world opens up to a lookout high in the mountains, where we set out a proper picnic lunch—fresh, local, and surprisingly fancy for a spot reached entirely by dirt trail. It’s a small moment of luxury before the big moment of gravity: a massive 5,000-foot descent that winds all the way down to the lake below.
The ride finishes with a glide into San Juan La Laguna, the vibrant artist town known for its colorful murals, painted streets, weaving cooperatives, and relaxed lakeside rhythm. It’s a beautiful counterpoint to the rugged terrain above—art, color, and calm to match the day’s adrenaline.
The whole loop feels like a story told in three acts: wild highlands, indulgent mountaintop lunch, and a rolling dive into one of the most creative towns on the lake.
