Ride into the Heart of Highland Culture

This one–day adventure combines mountain biking through the dramatic Mayan highlands with a cultural immersion in one of the most famous markets in Central America: Chichicastenango. Known locally as “Chichi,” this vibrant town perches on a dramatic ridge in Guatemala’s Quiché region. For centuries it has been the crossroads where remote villages come to trade textiles, pottery, produce, and traditions.

Our journey begins in Antigua Guatemala, where we shuttle high into the cool pine forests before dropping into a network of ancient footpaths. These trails have been used for generations, connecting isolated villages across the ridgelines and valleys of the highlands. Expect a mix of backroads, stone paths, and incredible views across the canyons.

The Market Experience

Arriving in Chichicastenango, you’ll step into a kaleidoscope of color and sound. The Thursday and Sunday market days are legendary, with hundreds of stalls spilling into cobbled streets. You’ll find handwoven textiles, embroidered huipiles, wood carvings, and ceremonial masks, each carrying stories of Maya heritage. Beyond shopping, the market is an experience of living culture—local women in traditional dress, vendors bargaining in K’iche’ Maya, and the fragrance of incense and street food mingling in the air.

We’ll pause here for time to explore the market, enjoy a traditional lunch, and soak in the rhythms of highland life. The day also includes a visit to the town’s iconic Santo Tomás Church, where Catholic and Maya traditions blend in ceremonies and offerings that have taken place for centuries on its steps.

Return to Antigua

In the afternoon, we shuttle back to Antigua, passing through a changing landscape of pine forest, maize fields, and volcanic ridges. Riders can relax and reflect on the day—a true blend of physical adventure and cultural discovery.
