Hidden high in the Guatemalan highlands, Totonicapán is home to one of the most unique mountain biking environments in Central America. The trails cut through El Bosque de los 48 Cantones, the highest forests in Central America, rising to nearly 3,300 meters (10,800 ft) above sea level. This is a rare landscape where old-growth cypress and pine forests blend into alpine grassland plateaus, broken up by rocky outcroppings, exposed ridgelines, and dramatic stone towers.
These forests are protected by the 48 Cantones of Totonicapán, a council of Indigenous community leaders who have banded together for generations to defend their ancestral land. Because of this stewardship, the riding here feels untouched and intentional—trails shaped by terrain, not machines.
The descents are long, raw, and constantly changing. Expect a mix of rocks, roots, natural gullies, and steep forest lines that eventually drop over 1,000 meters from the high alpine zone down into the dry canyons of Quiché below. One moment you’re riding through cool, misty forest; the next, you’re descending into warm, rugged canyon terrain.
This is mountain biking at scale—big elevation, wild landscapes, and deep cultural roots—making Totonicapán one of the most special and least-known riding destinations in Guatemala.

HIGHLIGHTS
- 2 days packed with extreme descents
- Deep, remote pine forests
- Best views high above the Western Highlands
- Shuttle assisted

RIDE DESCRIPTION
In this exclusive 2-day enduro epic, you’ll dive deep into the remote forests of Guatemala’s Western Highlands, riding terrain few mountain bikers ever reach. Each day begins with a shuttle climb to nearly 3,300 meters, passing through Cumbre María Tecún—a striking rocky outcrop and sacred site where traditional Mayan rituals are still held today.
From the high alpine zone, the riding turns serious. These trails are steep, raw, and unapologetically technical, packed with rocks, roots, natural ditches, and sudden fall-line pitches. Line choice matters. Commitment is required. This is terrain that rewards strong bike control and confident decision-making.
The highlight descent is the legendary Culebra Quichelense—a long, twisting drop that snakes its way down the mountainside, constantly changing character as it sheds elevation. It’s demanding, physical, and relentless, and it will push even advanced riders to their limits.
This tour is built for riders who seek true technical challenge, cultural depth, and big-mountain descents—two full days of enduro riding at its wildest and most authentic.
